The difference between early diagnosis and delayed care is often the difference between recovery and escalation. Yet across many communities, that gap still persists—driven by limited access to testing, delayed treatment, and constrained frontline capacity.

In April, Unicom Chemist took deliberate steps to address this gap—moving beyond traditional pharmacy practice to actively shape healthcare outcomes through access, education, and system strengthening.

From Awareness to Action: Redefining Preventive Care

Preventive healthcare is only effective when it is accessible and understood. At our Osu branch, the “Know Your Skin” activation was designed to do more than provide skincare advice — it introduced a model of accessible, personalized health engagement. Individuals were guided through consultations that helped them understand their skin types, identify concerns early, and make informed care decisions. This initiative reflects a broader shift—moving preventive care from concept into everyday access, where individuals are empowered with both knowledge and practical solutions.

Strengthening the Foundations of Rural Healthcare

Access is not just about proximity—it is about functionality. In Nyitawuta, near Akatsi in the Volta Region, Unicom Cares delivered a fully solar-powered electrification system to the Presbyterian Clinic serving the community. Reliable electricity is fundamental to effective healthcare delivery, enabling diagnostics, preserving medications, and ensuring continuity of care. Alongside this, the clinic was stocked with Artemet in preparation for the malaria season. This combined approach—strengthening infrastructure while ensuring treatment availability—addresses two critical barriers simultaneously: readiness and response.

Investing in the Future of Healthcare Delivery

Healthcare systems are only as strong as the professionals who sustain them. Our participation in the White Coat Ceremony as Guest of Honour reflects a commitment to the next generation of pharmacists. Beyond ceremony, it signals an investment in professional identity, ethical practice, and long-term healthcare leadership. This is not symbolic—it is strategic. Strengthening the future workforce is essential to sustaining improvements in healthcare delivery.

Building Capacity to Improve Malaria Outcomes

Malaria control requires more than treatment—it requires informed, capable providers. Through a nationwide webinar delivered in partnership with the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana, Unicom Chemist supported the training of over 700 pharmacists. The focus was clear: improving clinical decision-making, strengthening adherence to treatment protocols, and enhancing patient management. By prioritizing knowledge transfer and professional development, this initiative contributes directly to more consistent and effective malaria care across the country.

Taking Healthcare to the Community Level

For many, access challenges are not institutional—they are local. To address this, Unicom Chemist implemented a coordinated series of outreach initiatives across churches, markets, schools, and communities, including: Mount Olivet Methodist Church (Dansoman), Church of Pentecost (Sunyani), Techiman market and school outreach programs, Community engagement in Nkoranza, Training programs for licensed chemical sellers

These interventions were designed to meet people where they are—bringing testing, education, and guidance directly into everyday environments. The objective was clear: reduce delays in diagnosis, increase awareness, and enable earlier intervention.

Expanding Access Through Retail and Distribution Networks

Timely diagnosis is the first step toward effective treatment. To strengthen this, Unicom Chemist extended free malaria testing across its retail outlets while equipping wholesale partners with malaria test kits. This expanded the availability of testing beyond traditional clinical settings, allowing pharmacies and chemical sellers to serve as critical access points within their communities. This approach strengthens the healthcare ecosystem—ensuring that more individuals can access early diagnosis and appropriate care without delay.

A Coordinated National Impact

These were not isolated activities. They formed part of a coordinated effort to expand access and strengthen frontline healthcare capacity across Ghana.

• 5,000+ people reached through testing, education, and engagement50+ locations activated nationwide

• 6+ regions covered

• 100+ pharmacies engaged in testing and treatment support

• 100+ chemical sellers trained and empowered

These outcomes reflect a shift from fragmented interventions to structured, scalable impact.

From Access Gaps to Health Outcomes

A persistent challenge in healthcare delivery is the gap between symptoms and action. Low testing rates and delayed diagnosis continue to drive avoidable complications—particularly in malaria-endemic regions. By expanding access to testing, strengthening provider capacity, and increasing community awareness, Unicom Chemist is contributing to a system where earlier detection becomes the norm, not the exception. The result is not just increased activity—but improved outcomes.

A Continued Commitment to Healthcare Leadership

April’s work represents more than a series of initiatives—it reflects a strategic approach to healthcare delivery. At Unicom Chemist, our focus remains clear: advancing access, strengthening capacity, and improving lives. By aligning community engagement, professional development, infrastructure support, and treatment access, we continue to build a more responsive and effective healthcare system. The goal is not only to reach more people—but to ensure that when care is needed, it is available, timely, and effective.
